Derrick Felton

Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!

Blessings,

The man you are meeting is of southern descent, born in Louisiana and hailing from the magnolia state of Mississippi. Derrick E. Felton, graduated from McComb High School in 1988. Embarking on his journey after graduation he joined the United States Army where he served on active duty, and was stationed at Fort Richardson, Alaska. In 1992, he joined the United States Air Force Reserves and took his first step towards higher education.

While working on his degree Mr. Felton was introduced to working with at risk youth with sever emotional behavior and adults with sever mental health issues. He was a Volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for the state of Alaska, where he volunteered to advocate for the rights of children. In addition he provided training to the Alaska Natives on Suicide and Suicidal Ideation. While being exposed to this profession he made alliances with the state and the community who influenced him to continue to be an advocate for those in need.

Mr. Felton completed his undergraduate degree and received a BA in Psychology and an  AA in Human Services from the University of Anchorage. Thereafter he continued to exposed himself to the barriers that people of color face daily particularly the African American Community. In the year of our Lord 1998 Mr. Felton stepped foot on the soils of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he was accepted into the Masters Program at the University of Pennsylvania.

During his two years at PENN he was the Student Council President, a member of the Association of Black Social Workers, one of the cofounders of the Emerging Professional Men in the School of Social Work and a faithful member of Beluah Baptist Church. Currently he works full-time for the Department of Veterans Affairs as a Veteran Service Representative and part-time as a therapist at North Western Human Services where he provides individual counseling for adolescents and adults. His hard work was recently rewarded with a job transfer into the San Francisco’s Department of Veterans Affairs Vet Center as a social worker working with veterans who have post traumatic syndrome (PTSD), unemployment, drug and alcohol abuse, and other life stressors.

Mr. Felton’s passion relies on first being a man of God, a father, a friend, a brother to those in need, and serving the community in any aspect that he can. He is working on starting a support group that would enable fathers to better understand the system of child support and provide individual counseling about being responsible parents in and out of the home. He is also interested in working with African Americans in marriage and family counseling.
