Brian Armstead
Brian Armstead is the Education Coordinator for PCCY—Philadelphia Citizens
for Children and Youth. PCCY is the region’s leading child advocacy organization
and Mr. Armstead is currently working on projects to examine the ability of
public schools to provide the basic things that schools should have (e.g. a
full-time nurse, books, heat in the winter, etc.). He is also engaged in a
project to identify the policy barriers preventing effective service to
out-of-school youth as well as the establishment of a public high school
teaching the discipline of peace and conflict resolution (The Parkway NW High
School for Peace and Social Justice).
Mr. Armstead received Masters of Social Work and Masters of City Planning
degrees from the University of Pennsylvania in 2004. Prior to that, he worked
for the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations (PCHR) where he provided
mediation services for neighbors that were in conflict and also responded to
incidents of inter-group conflict throughout the city.
Mr. Armstead also has a long history of working with youth, including as a
DHS social worker and a SCOH social worker for SCAN, Inc. He also co-founded
and-- for over ten years--facilitated Rites of Passage programs for teenage
Black males.
